Women's Basketball Rallies to Defeat Trinity International in Overtime Wednesday

GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team came back against Trinity International at the Savannah Center Wednesday and defeated the Trojans, 71-61, in overtime, Wednesday. Katelyn Halfacre hit a three at the buzzer to force overtime and the RedHawks outscored the Trojans 16-6 in the overtime period.

GAME RECAP
Both teams traded the first three baskets to start the game. TIU scored back-to-back baskets to grab a 10-6 advantage halfway through the first quarter.

The Trojans had a 12-9 lead with 1:19 left in the opening frame. IU Northwest would score the next six points after a three-pointer by Madison Wirey and Karli Miller converting on a three-point play to go up 15-12.

TIU beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter with a basket. The RedHawks led 15-14 after one quarter.

Lauren Smolen and Michaela Schmidt made layups to start the second quarter to put the RedHawks up 19-14. Sarah Martin made it 25-20 IU Northwest with 3:12 left. 

Karli Miller made a huge basket with 12 seconds left to make sure the RedHawks had the lead going into the break as TIU scored with a few seconds remaining. IU Northwest went into the break ahead 27-25.

The Trojans started the second half with a basket then Schmidt responded with a three-pointer. Samantha Martin tied the game at 34-all then TIU went on a 6-0 run to close out the third quarter leading 40-34.

TIU opened up the fourth quarter extending their lead to 45-37 with eight minutes to go. IU Northwest was able to respond with four in a row to cut it down to four but TIU bounced back with a three-pointer to make it seven.

The Trojans grabbed their biggest lead of the night which was nine (52-43) with 2:12 left in regulation. Here came the RedHawks.

Schmidt knocked down a pair of free throws, made a three-pointer and hit a layup to make it a two-point game (52-50) again. TIU would hit three out of their next four free throws to make it 55-50 with under 30 seconds left.

Sarah Martin made a layup with seven seconds left to make it 55-52 TIU. The Trojans would miss both free throw attempts on their next possession then Halfacre recieved the ball from Meghan Long and buried the three to send the game into overtime.

TIU started overtime by making a three-pointer but IU Northwest was able to respond with 11 straight points capped off by a layup from Tiara Jackson. The Trojans tried to crawl their way back into the game by making a three-pointer with under a minute left but that was all their scoring.

IU Northwest was able to put the game away after Jackson made a pair at the line and Schmidt making a layup. The RedHawks won the game 71-61.

UP NEXT
IU Northwest will be back in action Saturday, February 12 as the RedHawks travel to Whiting, Indiana to take on Calumet College of St. Joseph with game time scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
