Box Score Gary, IN - The IU Northwest Women's Basketball team pulled off a win against the #13 ranked Indiana Tech Warriors on Monday afternoon. This marks the second win against a ranked team for Coach
Jesse Ford's RedHawks.
After a defensive struggle for the first 3 minutes of the game,
Sarah Martin converted on a runner to score IU Northwest's first points of the game to tie the game up at 2. Indiana Tech scored 4 straight points to stretch the lead to 6-2.
Alyna Santiago came back down the floor and converted on a pull up jumper. The Warriors then converted on a three point field goal before Santiago was fouled in the act of shooting and she converted 1-of-2 from the line. After a defensive stop, the RedHawks got the ball into
Tiara Jackson's hands down low to cut the Warrior lead to 9-7. A foul called on Santiago saw the Warriors convert both shots from the charity stripe and a layup from the Warriors made the lead 13-7. Karli Miller sparked the RedHawks 8-0 run. Jackson was fouled and converted both free throws and then
Makayla Best got a pull up jumper.
Michaela Schmidt gave the RedHawks a lead (17-16) with a lefty layup. Jackson fouled a Warrior and the Warrior converted 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game up going into the 2nd Quarter.
The RedHawks went on a 9-1 run to start the 2nd.
Makayla Best came out of the huddle from the quarter break with a three pointer. Martin was found again for a runner from the left side of the court and Best scored two contested pull ups in a row using the bank on both. The Warriors hit a three pointer and then both teams went cold for the next 3 minutes of action. Jackson was fouled on a made basket, but Jackson was unable to complete the three point play. Back-to-back made free throws and a made three by the Warriors shrank the RedHawks lead to 1 (28-27).
Michaela Schmidt was fouled on a shot and she converted both free throws. The RedHawks had a 30-27 lead to end the half.
Four points by the Warriors started the 3rd Quarter before
Sarah Martin drove the baseline for a reverse layup.
Michaela Schmidt scored 13 straight points where she hit a shot clock beating triple, drove to the middle of the lane and was able to hit a step through layup, converted on a three point play, made both free throws after being fouled driving to the basket, and finished it off with another triple for the RedHawks to stretch the lead to 45-37 RedHawks. The Warriors completed a three point play before
Karli Miller hit a contested layup with 2:30 left in the quarter. The Warriors finished the quarter on a 4-0 run. The score heading into the final stanza was 47-44.
Michaela Schmidt started the 4th with another step through lefty layup. The Warriors went down the floor and converted another basket before Jackson spun and laid one home. The Warriors hit a three to pull them back to down two points. Santiago drove again and was fouled and hit both of her free throws to push the lead back to 4.
Michaela Schmidt got into foul trouble after back-to-back fouls were called against her. She continued playing with 4 fouls.
Karli Miller stole an arrant pass and was fouled on her drive where she converted both free throws. Schmidt was again fouled while driving and hit 1-of-2 free throws to push the lead back to 58-52. The Warriors came back down the court and scored on a layup.
Alyna Santiago was fouled in the back court after stealing the ball away and the Warriors were over the limit. Santiago converted on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. The Warriors scored 5 straight points tying the game up at 59 with 1:21 remaining in the game.
Karli Miller scored another layup and Indiana Tech went back down the floor and capitalized on a defensive mistake from the RedHawks for a layup of their own.
Alyna Santiago drove left and was fouled with 36.6 seconds remaining in the regulation and she converted on 1-of-2 free throws. The Warriors scored a layup after a RedHawk stripped the ball from a Warrior player and fell right into the waiting hands of the scorer. A miss from the RedHawks led to IU Northwest fouling with 9.6 seconds remaining in the game. Indiana Tech made 1-of-2 free throws to give them a 64-62 lead.
Michaela Schmidt took the inbound pass and drove left and finished with another step through to tie the game back up with 3.4 seconds remaining in the regulation. Indiana Tech committed a turnover after advancing the ball to their bench side to finish regulation time.
Sarah Martin started the scoring in Overtime with another floater. The Warriors scored a jumper to tie the game back up at 66.
Alyna Santiago hit a runner from the free throw line to reclaim the lead for the RedHawks. After a Warrior steal,
Karli Miller committed a foul and the Warriors hit the first and missed the second. The RedHawks went back down the court and
Karli Miller drove for another layup.
Karli Miller stole the ball from a arrant pass from the Warriors and
Michaela Schmidt drove and was fouled converting the second free throw. Indiana Tech called timeout down 71-67 with 37.5 second remaining in the first overtime. Another

Alyna Santiago poked the ball away twice from the Warriors but the second time she was called for a foul and the Warriors converted both free throws. Santiago was fouled and hit her first free throw. Indiana Tech came back down the floor and missed on a reverse layup and the time ran out for the Warriors with the RedHawks winning by the score of 73-69.
Michaela Schmidt led all scorers with 23 points.
Tiara Jackson added another double-double to her total for the year with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Karli Miller and
Alyna Santiago scored 11 and 10 respectively with Miller grabbing 5 steals.
Makayla Best and
Sarah Martin rounded out the scoring for the RedHawks with 9 points and 8 points respectively.
