Women's Basketball Rallies from 1st Half Deficit; Team Honors Lauren Smolen Before Game

GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team rallied from being down at halftime to come back and defeat Trinity Christian, 82-73, at the Savannah Center, as six players reached double figures, Thursday. Lauren Smolen was also honored before the game.

GAME RECAP
Trinity Christian started the game with a three-pointer then IU Northwest bounced back and got a layup by Michaela Schmidt and a three-pointer by Sarah Martin. The Trolls responded right back with another three to go up 6-5 early.

Later in the quarter, TCC went up 20-13 with 2:18 left in the first period. Sarah Martin hit from three once again to keep it close.

The Trolls went up 24-17 with under 17 seconds left then Sarah Martin knocked down her third three of the night. TCC was up 24-20 at the end of the first quarter.

Karli Miller started the second quarter with back-to-back layups to tie the game at 24-all. TCC responded right back with two straight baskets of their own. 

Katelyn Halfacre knocked one from downtown to give IU Northwest a 31-28 lead with 5:29 in the first half. The Trolls responded with six straight points to go up 34-31.

Samantha Martin gave the RedHawks back the lead after making back-to-back baskets. Trinity Christian responded with a three-pointer.

Halfacre caught fire again from three-point land as the freshman hit two in a row for a 41-37 advantage with 2:01 left before the halftime break. TCC closed out the half with a 7-0 run to go up 44-41 at halftime.

IU Northwest started the second half with a 13-0 run to go up 54-44. The Trolls responded with a bucket then Schmidt and Miller got it right back with baskets of their own. 

Tiara Jackson closed out the third quarter after making back-to-back layups. The RedHawks led 67-54 at the end of the third.

Jackson started the fourth quarter with a basket to make it 69-54. TCC fought back and score eight straight points to cut it to 69-62 with 8:03 left.

Meghan Long converted a huge three-point play shortly after to make it a double-digit lead again. The Trolls kept making it close as it was 73-68 with five minutes to play.

Halfacre knocked a down a huge three moments later to try to keep their distance. TCC would not go away as the Trolls hit another three to make it back to five (78-73) with two minutes left.

Schmidt was able to close out the game with back-to-back layups and the RedHawks were able to keep the Trolls off the scoreboard the rest of the contest. The RedHawks won 82-73.

UP NEXT
IU Northwest will be back in action Saturday, January 29 as the RedHawks travel to Holy Cross College to take on the Saints starting at noon CT.
