Women's Basketball Captures Victory Against Spring Arbor Tuesday

GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team wrapped up the 2021 calendar year with a 60-45 victory against Spring Arbor at the Savannah Center Tuesday.

GAME RECAP
Both teams traded baskets to start the game then IU Northwest went on a 11-0 run capped off by an and-one by Michaela Schmidt to make it 13-2. The Cougars scored six unanswered points to make it 13-8. 

Katelyn Halfacre hit a three-pointer and Sarah Martin made a layup towards the end of the first quarter. The RedHawks led 18-8 at end of one. 

Samantha Martin started the second quarter with a layup to make it 20-8 in favor of the RedHawks. SAU responded a basket then Tiara Jackson bounced back with back-to-back buckets to expand the lead to 24-13. 

IU Northwest closed out the half with a 7-0 run after Karli Miller made a layup then Halfacre hit a one from downtown and a jumper. The RedHawks led 36-17 at the halftime break.

Jackson started the second half with a basket to expand their lead out to 21. Spring Arbor did not give up as the Cougars scored 10 straight points to cut it back down to 11 (38-27) with 4:36 left in the third. 

Cougars cut it to down to eight (42-34) but that was the closest Spring Arbor got. Halfacre responded with a three-pointer and Sarah Martin had a basket to close out the third quarter.

The RedHawks led 47-34 at the end of the third.  Spring Arbor started the fourth quarter with four straight points to cut it back down to eight. Sarah Martin responded with a three-pointer to expand the lead to 50-39. 

It was 52-42 IU Northwest then the RedHawks scored six in a row thanks to baskets from Jackson and two straight from Schmidt made it 58-42.  The RedHawks ended up winning the contest 60-45.

IU Northwest will be back in action Sunday, January 2 as the RedHawks host No. 13 Indiana Tech at the Savannah Center in a non-conference matchup starting at 1 p.m. CT.
