Women's Basketball Falls in CCAC Opener Against Roosevelt Wednesday

GARY, Ind. -- Michaela Schmidt recorded her third double-double of the season but it was not enough as the Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team dropped their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener to Roosevelt Wednesday. Schmidt scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the game.

GAME RECAP
Both teams traded buckets throughout the quarter. IU Northwest had an 11-8 advantage after Madison Wirey made a basket. 

The score was tied at 13-all after the first quarter after Roosevelt scored the last bucket of the period.

The Lakers started the second quarter on a 5-0 run to go up 18-13. Tiara Jackson was able to respond for the RedHawks with a layup.

Roosevelt responded right back with a bucket of their own before Meghan Long hit one from deep to make it a two-point game (20-18). The Lakers were able to build up a lead as much as six (26-20).

The RedHawks responded with a 6-0 run to tie it at 26-26 after back-to-back layups by Lauren Smolen and Long. Both teams traded the next two baskets before Roosevelt went into the break with the last bucket to lead 32-30. 

Schmidt opened up the second half with a layup to quickly tie it but the Lakers got back-to-back baskets to make it 36-32. Roosevelt went on a 14-7 run throughout the third quarter after the Lakers made a three-pointer to make it 50-39 with 2:29 to play.

Long responded with a layup however Roosevelt was able to hit one from deep to make it 53-41 with 1:09 left in the third. RU led 53-42 after the third quarter.

IU Northwest looked to make a comeback in the final period but Roosevelt kept pouring on as the Lakers went up 18 (64-46) for their biggest lead of the night. The RedHawks had some fight at the end after Alyna Santiago and Wirey hit threes but Roosevelt won 73-66.

IU Northwest will look to bounce back Saturday, November 13 as the RedHawks host Judson University inside the Savannah Center starting at 1 p.m. CT.
