Turnovers Haunt Women's Basketball Against #8 Saint Xavier Saturday

Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team suffered a defeat in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game against the No. 8 team in the country St. Xavier. The Cougars (25-3, 18-0 CCAC) against the RedHawks (9-17, 6-12 CCAC), 92-47, at the Savannah Center Saturday. 

SXU started the game outscoring IUN, 8-2, in the first three minutes of the contest. The RedHawks responded with six points in a row with baskets by Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) and back-to-back jumpers by Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) to tie it at 8-8.

The Cougars then made another run outscoring the RedHawks 13-6 the rest of the quarter. SXU led 21-14 after the opening period. 

There was an opening basket by SXU to start the second quarter then Vieck responded with a three-pointer to make it a six-point contest. Jessy Siems (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) made it a three-point game (27-24) with 5:55 left in the first half. 

SXU had the upper hand again after that point as the Cougars held the RedHawks without a field goal for five minutes. The Cougars scored the next 10 points of the game to go up 39-25 for their biggest lead of the half. 

Back-to-back jumpers by Hannah Hammar (Hammond, Ind./Morton) and Boles made it a 10-point game (39-29) with 34 seconds left before the break. SXU took momentum into the second half after hitting one from downtown with not much time on the clock. 

The third quarter all St. Xavier as the Cougars outscored the RedHawks, 29-7. Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) made it 53-36 in favor of SXU with 3:45 left in period, however, the Cougars scored the last 18 points of the quarter to go up 71-36 heading into the fourth.

SXU used their huge third quarter and took it into the final period as the Cougars pulled away even further. Saint Xavier went up as much as 49 which came at the 2:37 mark in the fourth quarter and then ended up winning the game 92-47.

Boles led the RedHawks with 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. O'Malley also reached double figures for IUN as the senior pitched in 10 points in the setback. 

IUN returns to action at home Wednesday, February 12 as the RedHawks host Roosevelt starting at 5:30 p.m. inside the Savannah Center.
