Women's Basketball Heads Into Offseason on Strong Note with Huge Victory Against Judson Saturday

Elgin, Ill. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team ended the regular season on Saturday against Judson and went out with a huge double-digit victory.  The RedHawks (11-19, 8-14 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) defeated the Tigers (2-26, 2-20 CCAC), 73-52, Saturday. 

Freshman Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) made it 13-6 IUN after making it a layup. Judson tried to get back in the game after hitting back-to-back buckets to make it a one-possession game with 2:31 left in the first quarter.

Senior Jocelyn Colburn (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) ended the IUN drought with a basket to make it 15-10. The RedHawks led 17-12 after the opening quarter. 

Senior Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) had a huge start to the second quarter after converting on a huge and-one to make it 25-12 IUN with 7:49 left in the half. After Judson made back-to-back baskets, IUN went on a another run scoring 14 points in a row to close out the half ahead 39-17. 

Boles scored four straight from the free-throw line to start the second half to give IUN a 43-17 lead. IUN jumped to their biggest lead of the game after O'Malley, Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) and Colburn all made baskets gave the RedHawks a 51-20 lead then eventually went up 57-30 after the third.

Judson tried to fight back and cut it to 61-44 IUN in the fourth quarter then Lauren Smolen (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) and O'Malley crushed any longer run by the Eagles. O'Malley and Sarah Martin (Demotte, Ind./Demotte) ended the game with back-to-back layups to grab another 31-point lead which gave IUN a 73-52 victory.

Boles led the offense during the day as the freshman scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. In her last career game at IUN, O'Malley had 17 points on an outstanding 7-8 shooting from the floor with six assists.

Schmidt rounded out the leaders for the RedHawks with 12 points. Colburn, also had her final game at IUN added eight important points. Jayla Crump (Kouts, Ind./Kouts) could not play today due to a season-ending injury but she had an outstanding four years for the RedHawks. 

Ryan Shelton, IUN Women's Basketball Head Coach, said It was a good way to finish the season with a win with everyone contributing. 

"Ashley has the best scoring game of her career in her final game and Colburn added 8 in her final game," said Shelton. "Jayla unfortunately not able to play due to injury was in my mind as well as I am very proud to have coached seniors that helped us reach multiple national tournaments appearances."

IUN finishes the 2019-20 season with a 11-19 record and a 8-14 mark in their first season in the CCAC. The RedHawks finished tied for ninth place and barely missed the conference tournament. 

"Our freshmen and young players had the opportunity to gain valuable experience this year and were some of our very best players throughout the season," said Shelton. "I feel that the future is bright for our program moving forward into the off season."
