Box Score Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team used a big third quarter advantage to help them come back from down 14 points then carried over into the fourth period to come up with the victory against Roosevelt. The RedHawks (10-17, 7-12 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) defeated the Lakers (7-20, 6-13 CCAC), 75-68, at the Savannah Center, Wednesday.
IUN led 13-7 early in the first quarter after Sarah Martin (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) hit a three-pointer. Roosevelt closed out the period on a 8-2 run to make it 15-all after the first quarter.
Roosevelt started the second quarter making back-to-back buckets to make it 19-15. Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) responded with a three-pointer with 8:41 to play in the half.
The Lakers went up by 12 (34-22) midway through the second quarter for their biggest lead of the half. IUN tried to crawl right back into the contest after Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) made it single digits again (37-30) for the RedHawks. RU led by 10 points (42-32) at the halftime break.
The score was 50-36 in favor of Roosevelt but IUN would not give up with a little over five minutes left. IUN fought back in the final five minutes.
RU led 52-44 with 2:18 remaining then the RedHawks scored 12 points in a row thanks to buckets by Boles, a jumper by Vieck and a three-pointer by the junior made it 56-52 IUN.
IUN looked to pull away but RU would still be within striking distance. Roosevelt made it 61-59 with 5:48 to go in the game.
The closest Roosevelt got was with 3:36 left in the game when the Lakers cut it to one-point after making a pair of free throws. IUN would hang on to win 75-68.
Three players for IUN reached double figures on the night. Boles led the way for the RedHawks with a near double-double as the freshman scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Martin scored 15 points for the RedHawks. Vieck added 15 points including five huge points and four steals which switched momentum over to IUN.
IUN returns to action Saturday, February 15 as the RedHawks travel to Davenport, Iowa to take on Saint Ambrose, game time with the Fighting Bees is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
