Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker Against Trinity Christian Saturday

Palos Heights, Ill. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball dropped a close contest after their shot with four seconds left did not fall as Trinity Christian defeated the RedHawks, 65-63, in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game at DeVos Gymnasium, Saturday. 

 

Both teams traded early runs back-and-forth for the first quarter. After the first period it ended up being tied 16-all.

Sarah Martin (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) nailed a three-pointer and Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) hit a layup to put the RedHawks ahead 23-19 with 7:09 left in the half. TCC responded with a three-pointer of their own to cut it to a one point contest (23-22). 

IUN responded with six consecutive points with buckets by Da'Leshia Davis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) and Joclyn Colburn (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) to make it 29-22. The Trolls would not go away as they rallied for a 11-2 run the next five minutes to take a 33-31 lead with under two minutes left. 

The RedHawks quickly tied the score at 33-33 with a layup by Boles. Trinity Christian ended the half scoring the last five points to go up 38-33. 

The Trolls opened the second half with a trifecta then IUN cut it back down to four (43-39) after back-to-back layups by Lauren Smolen (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central). 

Back-to-back three pointers by Jessy Siems (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) and Michaela Schmidt (Highland, Ind./Highland) gave IUN a 52-49 lead with 1:07 to go in the third quarter. TCC hit a layup at the end of the third quarter to make it a two-point game (53-51) going into the final period.

Trinity Christian nailed a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter to give the Trolls the lead back. Both teams would trade leads back-and-forth then TCC led 64-63 with 2:46 after Boles hit a layup. 

IUN would be held off the scoreboard the rest of the game while TCC scored one point from the free-throw line. The Trolls won the game 65-63.

IUN had two players reach double figures in scoring and a pair had double digit rebounds. Boles recorded a double-double as the freshman scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. 

Schmidt added 11 points for the RedHawks to round out the IUN scoring. Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) led the RedHawks on the glass as the senior recorded 13 rebounds.

TCC (8-14, 4-11 CCAC) 

IUN (8-16, 5-11 CCAC) returns to action Wednesday, February 5 as the RedHawks travel to Whiting, Indiana to take on Calumet College. Game time with the Crimson Wave is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
