Box Score Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team was down 10 with 38 seconds in the third quarter but they were not out. Da'Leshia Davis provided a spark off the bench after coming in for the first time all game during the fourth quarter and Michaela Schmidt hit clutch free throws as the RedHawks defeated the No. 20 team in the country Indiana South Bend, 67-61, at the Savannah Center, Wednesday.
IUN had the upper hand in the early going of the contest as Lauren Smolen (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) capped off a 10-4 run to start the game. IUSB fought back and went on a 13-6 run to close out the period as the Titans had a 17-16 lead.
Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) opened the second quarter with a basket to give IUN a 20-17 lead. IUSB went on a 14-4 run the next five minutes to have a 31-24 lead around four minutes left in the half.
IUSB went into the halftime break ahead 34-29.
Smolen capped off a 9-2 run for IUN as the RedHawks pulled within 2 (38-36) with 4:48 left in the third. IUSB then scored 10 unanswered points to take a 48-38 lead late in the third quarter.
Davis checked in during the third quarter and helped change the game in the fourth quarter. With the Titans leading 53-46 with 6:34 left, Davis hit a huge three-pointer to keep the RedHawks within striking distance with a four-point deficit.
IUSB led 60-57 with 3:05 remaining in the contest but IUN had many chances at the line. Michaela Schmidt (Highland, Ind./Highland) hit six clutch free throws in a row and only a freshman to give the RedHawks a 65-61 lead with 45 seconds left.
Sarah Martin (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) secured the game after knocking down a pair at the line to make it 67-61 with 23 seconds left. That score would hold up as the RedHawks defeated the Titans 67-61.
The RedHawks shot 46.3 percent from the field. Four playeers for the RedHawks reached doubles figures.
Smolen led IUN with 15 points and eight rebounds. Vieck scored 14 points for the RedHawks.
Boles recorded 12 points. Schmidt rounded out the IUN leaders without even making a field goal as the freshman scored 10 points all from a perfect day at the striple.
"It was a great team win with several key plays and contributions. Davis' play making ability changed the entire momentum Schmidt's clutch free throw shooting sealed the win," Head Coach Ryan Shelton said. "In a season where we haven't gotten many breaks, I'm very proud of our team for the character they showed tonight."
IUN returns to action Saturday, February 1 as the RedHawks travel to Palos Heights, Illinois to take on Trinity Christian College. Game time is scheduled at 1 p.m. CT.
