2nd Half Dooms Women's Basketball at Huntington Monday

Huntington, Ind. — The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team let an early lead slip away in the second half as the RedHawks fell to No. 22 Huntington, 62-39, Monday. 

 

IUN had the early advantage in the contest after leading 11-6 with a jumper by Sarah Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) in the first quarter. 

Huntington went on a 7-3 run to close out the opening quarter trailing by only one including a three-pointer to close out the period. The Foresters scored the opening three-point basket in the second quarter to pull ahead 16-14.

Both teams traded baskets for the most of the second quarter. Martin converted a huge and-one with 4:53 left in the half to put IUN ahead 25-20. 

HU scored the next six points to grab a 26-25 lead with 1:54 left in the first half. Michaela Schmidt (Highland, Ind./Highland) answered right back with a jumper to give the RedHawks a short lead but then the Foresters got it back before the half to go ahead 28-27.

The second half was a complete different story for both teams as Huntington took total control of the game. The Foresters scored the first 14 points of the third quarter before Schmidt ended the drought.

Huntington outscored IUN 18-4 in the third quarter. The Foresters picked up where they left off for the fourth quarter to go up 25 points for their biggest lead of the night. 

Huntington would go on to win 62-39.

Martin led the RedHawks with 12 points. Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) also had nine points to round out the IUN leaders. 

IUN (6-9) returns to action Saturday, January 4 as the RedHawks travel for a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup against Governors State starting 1 p.m. CT.
