CHICAGO — The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team faced a national powerhouse on Friday night, falling 82-38 to No. 8-ranked University of Saint Francis (Ind.) on the opening day of the Catholic Classic hosted by Saint Xavier University (Ill.).
The RedHawks (1-3) came out strong in the first quarter, trading baskets early and even holding a 5-0 lead after Ava Kingery's three-pointer and a pull-up jumper from EJ Brown-Griffin. IU Northwest led 13-12 after the opening frame behind efficient shooting and tough defense that limited Saint Francis to 25 percent from the field in the period.
However, the Cougars (3-0) found their rhythm in the second half, using a 25-8 third-quarter run to pull away. IU Northwest fought to stay within striking distance behind De'Mour Watson, who paced the RedHawks with 12 points and nine rebounds while playing a game-high 34 minutes. Kingery added eight points and two steals, and Brown-Griffin contributed six points and solid perimeter defense.
Despite a cold stretch late, IU Northwest continued to show energy on both ends, forcing 17 Saint Francis turnovers and grabbing seven steals. The RedHawks connected on three three-pointers, including timely makes from Kingery and Deniza Fuentes, to keep pressure on the top-10 opponent through the first half.
Saint Francis shot 50 percent from the field overall and controlled the paint, but IU Northwest displayed growth against one of the NAIA's premier programs, particularly in transition and early defensive possessions.
IU Northwest closes play in the Catholic Classic on Saturday, Nov. 8, facing No. 5 Marian University (Ind.). Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Chicago.
