GARY, Ind. – Jessica Carrothers had a game-high 25 points and
Samantha Martin followed with a double-double for the Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team, but IU South Bend hung for the 58-55-win Saturday afternoon.
The RedHawks got off to a fast start jumping out to a nine-point advantage by the end of the opening quarter. In the first frame, IUN's defense held the Ttians to just one field for over nine minutes.
To start the second, the RedHawks built their lead to 21-9 after
Emma Schmidt scored on a layup. However, IUSB used a 21-7 run to grab a two-point (30-28) advantage going into intermission.
With three and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter, IUN was down nine but fought back when it used an 8-0 spurt to close the period. The run was capped by Martin when she grabbed an offensive rebound and hit the put back, which was part of her 10 and 10 afternoon.
The RedHawks couldn't keep the run going in the final quarter, as the Titans went back up eight with just under four minutes to go. However, IUN had one final push when it battled back to within a point when Carrothers nailed a jumper with 11 ticks remaining.
After the Titans hit a pair of free throws the RedHawks had one last chance to tie the game, but the pass was tipped away as time expired.
Next up for IUN is a Monday evening contest against conference foe Trinity Christian starting at 5:30 p.m.
