GARY, Ind. – Jalen Houston and
Brian Hernandez came off the bench to score a combined 32 points to push the Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team past IU South Bend Saturday 77-61 in CCAC action.
A minute into the first 20 minutes, IUSB tied the game at two, but
Anthony Taylor hit the front end of two free throws to give the RedHawks (8-9, 5-4) the edge. That lead would get to as high as eight on
Dannie Smith's three, but the Titans tied things up one more time.
Following the 24 all tie, IUN went 4-for-4 from the line, which was good enough to take a two-point lead into the locker room.
After intermission, IUSB hit from deep, which put them up 29-28, but
Trace Williams responded with his out trifecta on the next trip down the floor. From there the RedHawks would hold a slight cushion until the Titans tied the game one last time with just over seven to play.
After the last tie Houston drained one of his two three's on the day which jumped started a 12-2 run to put IUN up a baker's dozen. Over the final two and half minutes of play the RedHawks would balloon their lead to 16 after Houston's two shots from the stripe.
IUN's defense held IUSB to 33 percent (23-for-68) shooting, while the RedHawks shot nearly 42 percent (26-of-62). In all IUN got a game-high 17 from Houston, while Hernandez tickled the twine for 15.
Next up for the RedHawks is a Monday night home contest against Trinity Christian set for 7:30 p.m.
