GARY, Ind. – Makayla Best's three pointer with two and half minutes left helped lift the Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team past Governors State 58-44 Wednesday evening in CCAC play.
With the victory the RedHawks improve to 19-5 and 14-2 in conference play and return to action Wednesday, Feb. 8 at Trinity International.
Midway through the second quarter it looked as though IUN was going to take command of the game as it led 24-14 following
Tiara Jackson bunny. However, the Jaguars turned up the defensive pressure and kept the RedHawks off the board for nearly five minutes.
Sarah Martin finally ended the scoring drought for IUN late in the second period when she scored down low to give the RedHawks a three-point (27-24) advantage at the break.
With IUN nursing a four-point lead in the fourth, Jackson ignited the offense which would eventually see the RedHawks margin go to 10. Then with less than a minute left
Michaela Schmidt gave IUN its 14-point victory with a pair of free throws.
Three RedHawks finished the evening in double figures with Miller scoring 16, while Schmidt and Jackson combined for 23 points and 19 rebounds.
