SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Jessica Carrothers and
Emma Schmidt each eclipsed double figures, but a tough second quarter let Indiana University South Bend slip past the Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team 75-62 Tuesday night in CCAC play.
The RedHawks (4-4, 1-1) were down 10 (18-8) with 2:29 left in the opening period and then a Carrothers jump shot ignited the offense. Over the remaining moments in the quarter, IUN outscored IUSB 9-3 and was down just four going into the second.
Makayla Best sank a three to start the second stanza to put the RedHawks within one, but IUN could not continue the hot stretch. Schmidt, who scored 10 points on the night sank the back end of two free throws to close out the first half scoring.
Tiara Jackson got to work in the third when she fought her way to the basket to score two of her six points. IUN continued to claw back into the game as Schmidt knocked down a layup with 34 seconds left to make it a nine-point contest at 52-43.
When
Katelyn Halfacre drilled a three ball in the early stages of the fourth the RedHawks got the score to 56-50. IUN would keep the deficit at single digits until late in the game when the Titans broke through the press to wrap up the game.
The RedHawks have the rest of the week off and return to the court Wednesday, Nov. 29 to host third ranked Indiana Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m.
