GARY, Ind. – Four of the five starters hit double figures and the Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team was a 66-58 winner over Huntington Wednesday evening inside the Savannah Center.
The RedHawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead as
Samantha Martin scored three of those points, but the teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the first quarter. IUN would have another five-point advantage later in the period when Martin scored down low, but HU came right back.
Two minutes into the second stanza, the Foresters would take a lead, but the RedHawks would quickly erased the deficit. IUN would use a 14-4 run to go back up, but the teams would go to the locker room tied at 28.
For most of the third frame, HU would hold the lead, but the advantage never got larger than five. With 30 seconds to go in the quarter,
Katelyn Halfacre scored two of her 13 points to give IUN the lead for good.
With four minutes remaining in the game Martin scored two more of her team-high 17 points, which put the RedHawks up nine. IUN was not able to get push the lead any further, but
Emma Schmidt sank three free throws to ice the game.
Alyna Santiago and
Makayla Best also hit double digits as they scored 10 and 16 respectively, while Martin pulled down 10 rebounds. Santiago, meanwhile, dished a game-high seven assists.
IUN returns to the court Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they take on CCAC foe Calumet St. Joseph's.
