ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Dannie Smith scored a game-high 22 points and
Demarius Splunge grabbed 11 rebounds for the Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team, but Michigan Dearborn was a 91-86 winner Saturday afternoon in the Tim Horton's Classic.
Lamarius Lillard connected from deep six minutes into the contest to tie it up at 10 apiece, but six minutes later UMD held a 32-18 lead. The RedHawks would fight back and got as close as five (44-39) after a Smith bunny with a half minute to go in the half.
IUN was down as much as 13 (78-65) in the second half but climbed of the hole after using a 12-4 run, which was capped off on a Splunge layup. Splunge would finish the afternoon with nine points off the bench.
The RedHawks continued to get within striking distance (87-84) when
Jalen Houston scored two of his 18 on a fast break layup with just over a minute left. IUN, however, would not be able to take the lead as the Wolverines scored enough to hold on.
Anthony Taylor, meanwhile, hit the double-digit mark with 14 points, while Lillard swatted a game-high five shots for the RedHawks.
IUN returns home Tuesday to take on Andrews starting at 7 p.m. in a nonconference battle before going back on the road the week of Thanksgiving.
