DUBUQUE, Iowa – Anthony Taylor scored three of his 18 points at the end of regulation to force overtime as the Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team was an opening day 82-76 winner over Clarke Thursday evening.
The RedHawks had to battle from the start with the Pride building a lead by as much as 10 points twice in the first half. IUN fought back and got within one (24-23) on a
Jalen Houston bucket with 5:24 remaining in the stanza.
Clarke, however used a 12-6 run at the end of period to take 36-29 advantage into the locker room.
IUN came out in the second half and got a pair of baskets from Houston, while
Dannie Smith and
Lamarius Lillard also tickled the twine during the run. The lead was short lived with the Pride retaking the advantage and going up by as much as seven (62-55) with 2:33 left.
That's when the RedHawks kicked it into high gear, as the defense held Clarke without a bucket for over two minutes. During those two minutes, IUN got nine points from Taylor, which includes three free throws with one second left to force the extra session.
In overtime, the teams traded baskets during the first two minutes but following Smith's jumper at the 1:43 mark the RedHawks would never trail again.
IUN is back to work Friday at noon against Viterbo, who was a 76-69 victor over Judson earlier in the day at Clarke.
