DUBUQUE, Iowa – Brian Hernandez scored 12 points and picked up four steals off the bench to help the Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team to an 85-77 victory over Viterbo at the Clarke University Classic Friday afternoon.
Roughly midway through the opening half, the RedHawks found themselves down seven (20-13), but moments later
Kionne Layne sank a shot in the paint to give IUN its first lead of the afternoon. Then later in the opening half Hernandez connected from deep to put the RedHawks up 10 just before the break.
Jalen Houston would then hit an old fashion three-point play right before the intermission buzzer to put IUN on top by a baker's dozen.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Houston went back to work and hit a pair of charity shots give IUN a 15-point (48-33) cushion. Six minutes later, however, the RedHawks lead was down to one after a V-Hawks 16-2 run.
Then on the next trip down the floor
Lamarius Lillard nailed one of IUN's 13 three-point field goals on the day to end the Viterbo run.
The RedHawks would not allow the V-Hawks to get any closer as they would eventually build a 12-point advantage with 49 ticks remaining on two of Houston's team-high 22 points.
IUN returns to the floor on Friday, Nov. 10 with a trip Rochester University for the Tim Horton's Classic in Rochester Hills, Mich.
