GARY, Ind. – Erica Packwood had a match-high 14 kills for the Indiana University Northwest volleyball team, but Indiana University South Bend escaped town with a four-set (22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 17-25) CCAC victory Thursday evening.
Briah Strezo put down a kill and the Titans had unforced error to give the RedHawks a seven- point (11-4) edge in the opening set. IUSB, however outscored IUN 13-6 to tie the first stanza at 17 apiece.
The RedHawks, meanwhile, kept fighting and were looking for the finishing momentum after a Packwood kill, but IUSB scored four of the five final points to grab the edge.
During the second set, IUN held a 15-11 lead and later was looking to even the match after going up 23-21, but a 4-0 Titan spurt finished off the frame.
A Packwood and
Karly Jevert block put IUN on top 5-0 in the third, but the Titans grab the lead later at 14-10 before the RedHawks used a 6-0 swing. IUN never lost the advantage after the run as Packwood had four kills over the final moments of the set.
Despite going down 12-3 in the final set, IUN would shift the momentum after calling a timeout and would get to within five at 22-17. Strezo had a pair of kills during that time, but it wasn't enough as the Titans scored the final three points to take the win.
IUN is back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when St. Ambrose comes to Gary for the annual Dig Pink breast cancer awareness match.
