La Crosse, Wis. – IU Northwest Women's Basketball took the floor on Saturday in the finale of the Viterbo Showcase classic looking to make it two for two on the weekend and their fifth straight win to open the 2022-23 season.
The Dakota State Trojans 2022 National Tournament participant and Northstar Conference Champions had other plans however as a raced out to a 33 point first quarter and double-digit lead over the RedHawks and took a commanding 61-32 lead into the half.
IU Northwest plagued by turnovers and cold shooting from long range throughout the afternoon piled up 15 turnovers in the first half is the Trojans built a 29 point lead. The RedHawks to finish the game with 24 turnovers and an icy 3-17 from long distance.
The Dakota State defensive pressure would allow the Trojans to capitalize on the IU Northwest overs turnovers turning them into easy baskets en route to 50% shooting on the game. The RedHawks were led by
Michaela Schmidt who finished with a team high 15 points. Makayla Best added 9 points with
Alyna Santiago, Kayla Sirjord and
Tiara Jackson all adding 7 points each.
IUN shot 44% for the game, however just 17% from long range. The loss was the first of the season for IUN as their record fell to 4-1 overall.
