DAVENPORT, Iowa — IU Northwest volleyball opened Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play in dramatic fashion Wednesday night, storming back from a first-set loss to defeat Saint Ambrose 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-18) at Lee Lohman Arena.
The Fighting Bees entered the match receiving votes in the NAIA preseason poll, but the RedHawks (4-6, 1-0 CCAC) used balance at the net and pressure from the service line to secure their first league victory of the season.
Lindsey Krueger had a standout night with 15 kills, 11 digs and a service ace, while Eva Everett delivered a match-high four aces and 21 digs. Gabi Lilovich added eight kills and 18 assists, and setter Raniyah Preston finished with eight kills, 19 assists and 14 digs.
Saint Ambrose took early control in the opening set, capitalizing on RedHawk errors to build a 19-11 lead. Despite late kills from Krueger and Kaelan Murphy, the Bees closed the frame 25-15.
The second set turned in IU Northwest's favor after a slow start. Saint Ambrose jumped ahead 10-5, but the RedHawks responded with kills from Lindsey Krueger and Raniyah Preston to chip away at the deficit. Down the stretch, Murphy hammered a kill to make it 24-22 before Preston closed the frame with a swing that sealed the 25-23 win and evened the match.
The RedHawks dominated the third set with multiple service runs from Lilovich and added two late kills, as IU Northwest cruised to a 25-16 win to take the match lead.
In the fourth set, Abby Allen reeled off three consecutive service aces to push the RedHawks ahead 12-9. Krueger and Preston each added late kills to seal the 25-18 victory and complete the reverse sweep.
IU Northwest continues its road stretch Friday at the Liz Lykowski Tournament, hosted by Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne. The RedHawks open play at 1 p.m. against Defiance College.
