DUBUQUE, Iowa – Indiana University Northwest volleyball opened Day 1 of the Clarke Pride Tournament with a four-set victory over Clarke University before falling to nationally competitive Madonna in straight sets Friday.
The RedHawks (2-1) defeated Clarke 3-1 (25-21, 25-13, 12-25, 25-19) in the opener before dropping a 3-0 decision (25-17, 25-22, 25-14) to Madonna in the nightcap.
Against Clarke, freshman setter Raniyah Preston fueled the attack with nine kills on .360 hitting, 15 assists and 15 digs. Junior Gabi Lilovich added seven kills and 15 assists, while Trinitie Lintner chipped in seven kills and a team-high six blocks. Abby Allen anchored the defense with 17 digs.
The RedHawks stormed out in the first set, using an early 6-2 run sparked by kills from Lintner and Lilovich. Clarke battled back within one at 21-20, but a Preston kill and a block from Kaelan Murphy helped IU Northwest finish the frame 25-21.
In the second, IU Northwest dominated with a 7-2 start, highlighted by consecutive blocks from Lintner and Lindsey Krueger. Preston's late kill and an ace from Lilovich capped the 25-13 win. After dropping the third 25-12, the RedHawks regrouped in the fourth. Murphy recorded two service aces and Preston sealed the match with a kill to close out the 25-19 victory.
In the evening match, IU Northwest ran into a tough Madonna squad led by Kira Buza's 16 kills. Lilovich paced the RedHawks with five kills and nine assists, while Murphy and Lintner added five and six kills, respectively. Allen again led the defense with 14 digs.
IUN trailed early in the first set before a Krueger kill pulled the RedHawks within 9-7, but Madonna responded with a 6-0 run to take control, 25-17. The RedHawks nearly stole the second, using a 6-1 surge highlighted by a Lintner block and Preston kill to lead 19-14. Madonna rallied back, however, closing the frame on an 11-3 run to win 25-22. In the third, Madonna's serving pressure proved decisive as the Crusaders built a 15-8 advantage and finished the sweep 25-14.
IU Northwest continues tournament play on Saturday, Aug. 23, facing York University (Neb.) at 1 p.m. before meeting Waldorf (Iowa) at 3 p.m. in Dubuque.
