EAST CHICAGO, Ind. — Despite a strong second-half push, IU Northwest women's soccer fell 1-0 to Judson University on Saturday afternoon at East Chicago Central High School in the Student-Athlete Mental Health Week kickoff match.
The RedHawks (4-3-5, 2-3-1 CCAC) outshot the Eagles 19-17 but were unable to find the back of the net after Judson's Isabella Garrelts scored the match's lone goal in the 12th minute. IU Northwest continued to create chances throughout the game, forcing 10 saves from Judson goalkeeper Eva Fernandez, including several late in the second half as the RedHawks pressed for an equalizer.
IU Northwest goalkeeper Isabel Escalera kept the RedHawks within striking distance, finishing with six saves in a full 90-minute effort. Midfielders Ava Haluska and Daisy Bonilla led the attack with a combined seven shots, while forward Piper Ellenberger added three shots on target.
Saturday's match also marked the opening of Student-Athlete Mental Health Week, supported by Hilinski's Hope, Lakeshore Bone and Joint Institute, Regional Health Systems, the IU School of Medicine, the IU Office of Counseling Services, and U Bring Change 2 Mind, who partnered with IU Northwest Athletics to promote mental health awareness and wellness among student-athletes.
The RedHawks return home Tuesday, Oct. 7, for a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at East Chicago Central High School
