GARY, Ind. – Indiana Northwest pulled off a close victory against St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Saturday, topping the Pomeroys 76-70 at the Savannah Center. The RedHawks improve to 2-0 on the season and the RedHawk Classic.
The game was marked by a deadlock at halftime, with both teams knotted at 32 points apiece. The second half saw the RedHawks pull away, outscoring the Pomeroys 44-38. Indiana Northwest shot an impressive 54.8% from the field in the second half.
Dannie Smith was a force for the RedHawks, leading all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Smith was particularly effective from the free-throw line, converting 9-of-12 attempts. He also contributed eight rebounds and a steal, helping secure Indiana Northwest's position down the stretch. Teammate
Trace Williams was a vital contributor as well, adding 22 points, nine rebounds, and five assists while shooting 50% from the field.
Anthony Taylor rounded out the RedHawks' double-digit scorers with 10 points and seven rebounds.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods was led by Jared Bonds, who came off the bench to score 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a three-pointer. Greg Jenkins added 15 points and seven rebounds, providing a steady presence for the Pomeroys. Caleb Iheukwu and Taeron Hogg also chipped in with 10 and 9 points.
Despite a solid defensive effort, St. Mary-of-the-Woods struggled with their perimeter shooting, making just two of 17 attempts from beyond the arc (11.8%). Their interior play, however, was strong, with the Pomeroys scoring 36 points in the paint and recording 24 second-chance points.
The RedHawks held their largest lead of nine points with six minutes remaining in the second half and managed to fend off a late push from the Pomeroys to seal the win. Indiana Northwest's defensive intensity in key moments proved instrumental, as they forced seven turnovers and turned them into nine points.
After an impressive opening weekend, Indiana Northwest will travel out to Rochester Hills, Michigan for the RCU Warrior Classic. Their first game of the classic is Friday, November 8 against Cleary University, time is still TBA.
