GARY, Ind. – Dannie Smith led the way with 18 points, while six others were in double figures for the Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team, but Olivet Nazarene escaped overtime with the 102-98 CCAC victory Saturday afternoon.
A Smith layup early in the opening half sparked 10-2 run, which put the RedHawks on top by five (10-5). The exclamation point for the run was a
Demarius Splunge three, but ONU responded 12-2 swing.
Near the end of the opening stanza the Tigers would go up by nine (43-34), but for the next three minutes IUN would fight back
. Anthony Taylor nailed a jumper to ignite a 9-2 swing, which left the RedHawks trailing by just two at intermission.
Around the halfway mark in the second half, ONU built a lead of 13 (66-53), but on the next trip down the floor for IUN a Splunge layup was a momentum shifter. The shift in momentum saw the RedHawks go on top by five late thanks in part to a 33-15 run.
However, after Smith sank pair of free throws the Tigers outscored IUN 6-1 over the final 30 seconds to force overtime.
During the extra time the teams traded baskets early, but ONU used a small run to escape with the win.
