FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Jaelyn Donald finished with a team-best 12 kills, but the Indiana University Northwest volleyball team was upended by IU Southeast (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) and No. 25 Indiana Tech (25-13, 25-11, 25-14) Friday evening at the Liz Lykowski Tournament.
The RedHawks are now 2-10 and they return for the second day of the Liz Lykowski Tournament Saturday starting at noon against Goshen and then finishing up at 2 p.m. against Concordia (Mich.).
Match One
IUN once again got off to a fast start against southern Indiana foe IU Southeast, but a late run by the Grenadiers stalled the RedHawks momentum. IUN trailed by one (17-16) after
Julianna Picicco slapped an ace down, but IU Southeast finished off the opening set with an 8-3 run.
Most of the second stanza was a back-and-forth battle, but the RedHawks trailed by two after Donald and
Briah Strezo hammered down a kill. However, another late run by Grenadiers shut down the IUN attack late.
Trailing by six early on, IUN fought back and got back within two (15-13) when Donald put down another one of her nine kills. The RedHawks, meanwhile, could not get any closer as a pair of short spurts by the Grenadiers put the contest away.
Match Two
In the nightcap IUN struggled to get the offense going as it -.078 and could overcome long sustained Warrior runs. Late in the opener,
Baileigh Uporsky and Donald each picked up a kill, while Packwood aced Indiana Tech.
During the second set the Warriors jumped out to a 13-4 advantage, but IUN scored four of the next five points to chop the deficit down to six after Packwood had kill and the defense scored on a pair of Warrior attack errors. The RedHawks though would not be able to get any closer.
Early in the final frame, the teams were trading points as Packwood and Donald added more kills to their respective tally. ITU, however had a 6-0 run to jump on top of the RedHawks 13-6 and the score would not get closer than five late.
