GARY, Ind. – Behind
Jaelyn Donald's 21 kills and
Erica Packwood's game-winning hammer, the Indiana University Northwest volleyball team defeated Governors State in a five-set (22-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-16, 15-12) thriller Thursday night in CCAC Play.
After the RedHawks dropped the first two sets of the night, a comeback was needed as they used a 6-0 run in the third stanza to grab the lead for good. The run was jump started on a
Briah Strezo kill and was capped off by a Donald smack down.
Later in the third set, IUN used another spurt to make a three-point Jaguars deficit into an eight-point (21-13) hole.
During fourth frame action, with the score was knotted at 11 all,
Karly Jevert tallied one of her six kills on the evening, which would give IUN a lead it would not relinquish. The RedHawks advantage would eventually balloon to nine when
Julianna Picicco and Jevert returned an attack for a block assist.
IUN and GSU were tied at 12 in the decisive fifth set when Strezo picked up her 12
th kill of the match, which started a set ending 3-0 run that was punctuated on Packwood's winning kill.
The RedHawks are back in action Saturday when Saint Xavier comes to Gary for a 1 p.m. first serve.
