CROWN POINT, Ind. – Gavin Niebel made a career-high 15 saves in his first start for the Indiana University Northwest men's soccer team, but an early second half goal was the difference as Olivet Nazarene held on for the 3-2 CCAC win.
Seven minutes into the game,
Francisco Torres got the RedHawks (2-5-1, 0-3-0) on the board first as he took a pass from
Jason Isaksen.
However, in the 19
th minute the Tigers got a pair of tallies to grab a 2-1 lead, but then at 27:58
Isaac Macias tied the contest up for IUN. That's where the score would stay going into halftime, but to get there Niebel had to make three saves.
Starting the second half, ONU (5-2-0, 3-0-0) was whistled for a foul in the box, which gave
Dom Bixeman the chance to give the RedHawks an advantage on a penalty kick. Tigers' keeper Leonard Bewig, however, made the save to keep the game knotted at two.
Then in the 59
th minute ONU took the lead, where the score would remain. However, Niebel made six more saves to keep IUN close, but the RedHawks couldn't a good look at the net over the final 30 minutes.
IUN returns to the pitch on Tuesday at 8 p.m. when Holy Cross comes to Crown Point for the conference match up.
