CHICAGO – Omar Mehisen and
Vitaliy Prots each hit the back of the net for the Indiana University Northwest men's soccer team, but Saint Xavier escaped with a 3-2-win Saturday afternoon in conference action.
All but the final five minutes of the first half were a scoreless tie with
Jared Hecimovich making three saves over that time. Offensively for the RedHawks (2-3-1, 0-1-)
Isaac Macias and
Dom Bixeman had shots but the SXU defense blocked the opportunities before they could get to the box.
In the 41
st minute the Cougars (3-1-4, 1-0-0) broke through after IUN was whistled for a foul, and that is where the score would remain at halftime.
Early in the second half Hecimovich would make another one of his five saves for the match. Then in the 70
th minute Mehisen tied the game for the RedHawks when he took a pass from
Alan Nunez.
Just moments later, IUN was called for a foul in the box, which gave the Cougars a penalty kick opportunity. SXU would score on the penalty kick and then score again at 80:17 to make it 3-1 heading into the final 10 minutes.
With seven minutes left in the contest Prots made it a one goal contest after getting a feed from
Luis Limones.
With just second remaining Limones gave the RedHawks one last chance with a corner kick, but IUN could not punch the ball in and SXU hung for the one goal CCAC victory.
The RedHawks are back to work Wednesday when they travel to Trinity Christian for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
