KOKOMO, Ind. – Behind a pair of second half penalty kick goals by
Kelly Shaffer, the Indiana University Northwest women's soccer team defeated instate foe IU Kokomo 2-1 Wednesday evening.
The RedHawks remain unbeaten and improve to 1-0-1 and return to action Saturday at the Crown Point SportsPlex against IU East.
The first 40 minutes of the game was a scoreless battle as neither team could get a shot past the respective keepers.
Isabel Escalera made three stops through 35 minutes of work before the Cougars scored at 41:05.
Offensively for the RedHawks they had three shots stoned by IUK goalie Kailee Moore and two other attempts that went wide.
Then three minutes into the second period, Shaffer tied the match after the Cougars were whistled for a foul. Then 16 minutes later Shaffer went back to work as she drained her third tally of the season following an IUK yellow card.
After the two RedHawk goals it was up to the defense to keep the advantage. Escalera made two of her match-best seven saves over the final 20 minutes to help in the victory.
