PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. – Abbie Tomblin scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team, but No. 3 Dordt held on for the 86-79 win Saturday morning at the Troll Classic.
 
The Defenders (3-0) got off to a fast start, but the RedHawks (1-2) battled back in the second quarter. Makayla Best scored in the paint, which put IUN within a basket (34-32) with three minutes left in the opening half. Drodt, however, finished the second quarter 10-4 swing to take a 44-36 lead into the locker room.
 
During third quarter action the Defenders and RedHawks traded point for point, but Tomblin drained a three at the end of the period, which helped with fourth frame momentum.
 
In the final quarter, Emma Schmidt made it a two-possession game with two minutes left when she drained a shot from outside for three of her 11 points. The RedHawks, however, couldn't get any closer as the Defenders hit their final four free throws to ice the game.
 
Also scoring in double figures for IUN was Samantha Martin, who tickled the twine for 17, while Alyna Santiago added 11 points. Martin added a team-high seven rebounds and a game-best three blocks to her total.
 
Next up for IUN is the Val Weinstein Classic at Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind., Friday, and Saturday.
