Jackson Propels Women's Basketball Past Lakers

Junior Forward Records 17 point,19 rebound Double-Double

Gary, IN - Coach Jesse Ford's RedHawks took part in a CCAC game against Roosevelt University on Wednesday night at the Savannah Center. The RedHawks and Lakers battled in November with the RedHawks taking a 79-59 win in Chicago, IL.

The Lakers scored first but Alyna Santiago hit the RedHawks only successful three pointer just six seconds later. IU Northwest was held scoreless for the next 2 minutes before Karli Miller was able to convert an and one which sparked a 9-0 run. Sarah and Samantha Martin as well as Alyna Santiago added the other six points during the run. Santiago and Tiara Jackson added one free throw a piece to go into the quarter break up 14-11.

The teams traded baskets throughout the second quarter with IU Northwest leading by a much as 5 and the Lakers pulling back even.  Karli Miller, Michaela Schmidt, Sarah Martin, Tiara Jackson, and Emma Schmidt all scored in the second for the RedHawks. IU Northwest outscored the Lakers 18-17 in the second quarter and went to the locker room for halftime up 32-28. 

Karli Miller got the scoring started in the second half after getting fouled on a shot thirty seconds into the 3rd Quarter.  She sank both free throws before a made jumper by Roosevelt. Tiara Jackson grabbed her first rebound of the quarter and came down the floor and was fouled and converted an and one for the RedHawks. Alyna Santiago scored three layups and Michaela Schmidt added two layups of her own as the RedHawks. Tiara Jackson brought down 9 rebounds during the quarter to help extend the RedHawks lead to 7 (49-42) heading into the final stanza. 

Makayla Best scored the RedHawks first basket of the fourth quarter with a layup before Tiara Jackson scored a layup and then was fouled on her next shot attempt and went 1-for-2 from the line. Makayla Best, Sarah Martin, Tiara Jackson, and Michaela Schmidt then led the RedHawks on a 8-2 run. Coach Ford's team was able to balloon the lead up to 19 before turning to the bench to take the game home. Emma Schmidt and Katelyn Halfacre were able to score the RedHawks last 6 points to solidify the RedHawks 78-71 win.

The RedHawks were led by Tiara Jackson with 17 points and 19 rebounds, which marks her 13th double-double of the year.  Sarah Martin added 12 points and 9 rebounds for the Redhawks and Alyna Santiago also had 12 points, 7 assists, and 5 steals on the game. Michaela Schmidt was also close to a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Karli Miller added 9 points, Emma Schmidt 7, Makayla Best 6, Samantha Martin and Abbie Tomblin 2 points respectively.

Season Note: Tiara Jackson ranks tied for 6th in the country in the NAIA with 12.2 rebounds per game.
