Women's Basketball Takes Down Rochester to Close Out 2022

Sarah Martin scores 24 to help RedHawks win 2022 finale.

Gary, IN - The IU Northwest Women's Basketball team played the Rochester University Warriors on Friday afternoon in an effort to close out 2022 with a three game win streak after beating Trinity International and #13 Indiana Tech at the Savannah Center.

Coach Jesse Ford's Redhawks got off to a slow start against the Warriors after missing 4 of their first 5 shots.  Sarah Martin started the RedHawks scoring with a layup. After a Michaela Schmidt missed three, Tiara Jackson rebounded the ball and put it back up to decrease the Warrior lead to 7-4. Martin scored a jumper before Rochester scored a jumper of their own and a three pointer to stretch their lead back to 6. The teams traded the next two buckets for each team before an and one by Michaela Schmidt with 1:47 remaining in the quarter. Another three by Rochester took the teams into the quarter break with Rochester leading 19-15.

After a Rochester jumper to start the second quarter, IU Northwest went on a 16-2 run with Tiara Jackson, Karli Miller, Katelyn Halfacre, Michaela Schmidt, and Sarah Martin all scoring for the RedHawks. Kate Halfacre hit two threes and Karli Miller scored 4 points during the run. A 5-2 run for Rochester caused Coach Ford to take a 30 second timeout to regroup his team. The RedHawks came out of the timeout and Karli Miller scored a jumper followed by Katelyn Halfacre's third triple of the quarter before Rochester scored a layup and Sarah Martin finished the scoring for the RedHawks with a jumper.  The RedHawks finished the quarter on an 8-3 run and outscored the Warriors 23-12 in the quarter.

The RedHawks got up as much as twelve points in the third quarter with baskets from Jackson, Sarah Martin, and a triple from Emma Schmidt. The Warriors finished the quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the RedHawks lead to 51-47.

Coach Ford made some adjustments heading into the final quarter that allowed for the RedHawks to outscore the Warriors 26-15 and had a lead of 17 points during one point in the quarter.

 The RedHawks were led by Sarah Martin with 24 points and 7 assists. Tiara Jackson completed another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds and Michaela Schmidt added 15 points and 7 rebounds. Karli Miller was just short of double figures in points after stepping on the three point line twice while making deep jumpers.  She added 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Katelyn Halfacre added her three triples in the second quarter to help the RedHawks take and ultimately keep the lead. Emma Schmidt added 3 and Alyna Santiago added 2 with 3 steals.

UP NEXT: The RedHawks start 2023 with CCAC games at Saint Xavier (Jan. 4, 5:30 PM) and Judson (Jan. 7, 1 PM) before returning home against Roosevelt on January 11 at 5:30 PM.

Game Note: Prior to the game, the RedHawks and Warriors participated in a moment of silence for Director of Athletics Ryan Shelton's nephew, Miles Krueger, who passed away at age 16.
