Gary, Ind. – In a tale of two halves, the RedHawks erased a small halftime deficit and turned it into a convincing win by way of a huge second half to earn the 70-43 win over visiting Cardinal Stritch and improve their record 6-1 on the season and remain perfect in conference play.
Â
A sluggish start with poor shooting d combined with limited free throw attempts to begin the game would see the RedHawks trail most of the first half and find themselves behind 31 to 28 at the break. The game is mostly a half court grudge match in the first 20 minutes between the wolves in the red hawks which allowed stretch to control the pace and limit the RedHawks fast-break opportunities.
Â
Successful halftime adjustments by IU Northwest Head Coach
Jesse Ford would see IUN dial up their man-to-man pressure to force Stritch miscues that led to easy RedHawk points off of turnovers. IUN would score of the first seven points in the second half to regain the lead and never look back as they cruised to their third straight conference win.
Â
The stifling RedHawk defense would limit stretch to just 12 second half points including five in the final quarter as I northwest outscored the wolves 42 to 12 in the second half. IU Northwest got big performances from
Sarah Martin with 21 points and a game high 22 points for
Katelyn Halfacre. Martin was 8-17 from the floor and 4-7 from long distance while Halfacre was instant energy and production off the bench going 9-15 from the floor and 4-7 from long range. Halfacre also added 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Â
IUN'sÂ
Alyna Santiago was also a big factor off the bench as her defense helped the change the momentum of the game and force Stritch turnovers to help ignite the RedHawks transition game. Santiago filled up the box score with 6 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. The RedHawk as a team would post an impressive 21 assists against just 13 turnovers.
Michaela Schmidt added 9 points for IUN and
Tiara Jackson posted a game high 13 rebounds.
Â
IU Northwest would force 19 Stritch turnovers and limit the Wolves to just 25% shooting for the game. The RedHawks will take a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday and enjoy their 6-1 overall record and perfect 3-0 record in CCAC conference play. They return to the court next Wed. Nov. 30 when they travel to Joliet, Ill. and St. Francis for a matchup between two of the CCAC's top teams.
