RedHawks Suffer Pair of Narrow Losses at Viterbo Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wisc. – IU Northwest Men's basketball traveled to La Crosse, Wisc. To participate in the Viterbo Invitational and suffered a pair of narrow losses. On Friday the RedHawks fought back after a slow start to erase a double-digit Bellevue lead to force overtime. The game would go to second overtime before the Bruins would outlast IU Northwest 89-83.
 
IU Northwest got off to a very slow start and trailed 19-3 six minutes into the game. The RedHawks would continue to try to close the gap and a made jumpshot from Isaac Stanback would trim the Bruin lead to single dights at 37-28 at the half.
 
A made three from Jared Johnson would cut lead to just 5 early in the second half with the momentum clearly shifting to the RedHawks. Stanback would strike again when his jumper cut the Bruin lead to just with 9 minutes to go. Another Johnson three would put IUN ahead by 6 at 69-63 and cap a 19-7 RedHawk run. With the game tied at 74 Johnson's three point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark and the game would go to overtime.
 
In the first overtime the game would be back and forth until Stanback would bury a three to tie the game at 81 each and a Bruin three would be off the mark to send the game to a second overtime.  
 
In the second overtime Malik Miller's jumper would re-tie the game at 87 with a minute remaining. The RedHawks would however fail to score again and the Bruins would hang on for the 93-87 win on double overtime. It was the second straight game for the RedHawks to go at least two overtimes and IU Northwest defeated Judson last Saturday in triple overtime.
 
Johnson led four RedHawks in double figures that included Stanback with 19, Lamarius Lillard with 16 and Miller with 11. Nicky Flesher added 9 points off the bench for IUN.
 
The following day the RedHawks would match up with the hist Viterbo V-Hawks in search of their third win of the season. 
 
A quicker start on Saturday would see the RedHawks build a double-digit lead courtesy of an Stanback jumper. IUN would take a 6 point advantage to the half at 43-39. The RedHawk would throughout the second half and by as many as 9 points in the second half, however the V-hawks would not go away. Jaivion Reid's pair of made free throws would put the RedHawks ahead 81-79 with just 39 second remaining in regulation.  
 
The V-Hawks would score in the paint to tie the game at 81 each with 17 seconds remaining setting up the RedHawks for a chance to win the game in regulation. Jared Johnson's drive attempt would lead to a turnover as we called for the offensive foul with just two seconds remaining in regulation and leaving the V-Hawks to go the length of the floor.
 
A pass just beyond halfcourt to a wide open Jack Monis allowed him to catch, turn and take a dribble and his pump fake would draw a foul on Stanback as the clock expired. Monis would convert both free throws and the V-Hawks squeaked out a 83-81 victory. Johnson led fobve RedHawks in double figures with a team high 23 points. Reid and Lillard both added 13 points each and Trey Steinhilber notched a career high 11 point. Nicky Flesher rounded out the the RedHawks in double figures with 10 points.

Up Next:
IU Northwest (3-5 / 2-0) will take a break from non-conference play to return to CCAC competition with a key matchup this Tuesday when the RedHawks travel to Bourbonnais, Ill. to face the Olivet Nazarene Tigers and try to remain unbeated in conference play.
