Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to St. Ambrose in Five Sets Tuesday

GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest volleyball team lost in a heartbreaker in five sets to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Ambrose, 3-2, Tuesday.

SET BREAKDOWN
Set 1: IU Northwest 25, St. Ambrose 21

  • Both teams went back-and-forth in the early going, which made it 6-6.
  • St. Ambrose scored four points in a row to make it 10-6 then the RedHawks scored the next four to tie it back.
  • The Fighting Bees and RedHawks traded back-to-back four point rallies.
  • IU Northwest led 20-15 and was able to hang onto the rest of the set.
  • SAU cut it back to 22-20 but RedHawks went scored the next three out of four points to win it 25-21.

Set 2: St. Ambrose 25, IU Northwest 16

  • The Fighting Bees went on a 4-1 run to start the second set. 
  • IU Northwest was able to bounce back and go on a 6-3 run and tie it at 7-all.
  • Both teams traded rallies the next few points after it was tied 12-12.
  • St. Ambrose scored the next four points to make it 16-12.
  • The RedHawks were unable to make it close as the Fighting Bees pulled away and won 25-16.

Set 3: IU Northwest 25, St. Ambrose 20

  • Both teams went back-and-forth in the first set and made it 9-9.
  • IU Northwest scored three in a row to make it 12-9 but SAU bounced back rally and tie it.
  • SAU made it 17-16 late in the third set but that was their last lead of the set.
  • The RedHawks went on a 5-1 run to the end of the third set to capture a 2-1 lead.

Set 4: St. Ambrose 25, IU Northwest 17

  • SAU bounced back and won the fourth set to force a winner-take-all fifth set.
  • Another set where both teams traded rallies early on in the set. 
  • The Fighting Bees led 14-12 midway through the fourth set before the RedHawks scored the next five points to make it 17-14 IU Northwest.
  • IU Northwest did not score the rest of the set as SAU scored the last 11 points to win it 25-17.

Set 5: St. Ambrose 15, IU Northwest 13

  • IU Northwest led 5-3 early in the final set before SAU tied it at 6-all.
  • The RedHawks had a 9-7 advantage late in the fifth set before the Fighting Bees scored five in a row to have a 12-9 lead.
  • IUN made it 13-12 SAU late but the Fighting Bees held them off.
