IU Northwest Volleyball Splits First Day of Rochester Tournament Friday

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich.  – The Indiana University Northwest volleyball team split a pair of games at the Rochester University Tournament Friday. The RedHawks defeated Northwestern Ohio, 3-1, and then fell to Rochester (Mich.), 3-1.

SET BREAKDOWN (GAME 1)
FIRST SET (IU Northwest 26, Northwestern Ohio 24)

  • UNOH led 3-1 after IUN took the opening point then the RedHawks rallied for three points in a row to grab a 4-3 lead.
  • IU Northwest scored five points in a row after it was 6-5 to make it 11-5 in favor of the RedHawks.
  • The Racers rallied for three points in a row then the RedHawks had the same to keep it a six-point lead (14-8).
  • Northwestern Ohio cut it back down to a one-point deficit (17-16) then IUN scored four in a row to make it 21-16.
  • UNOH would not go away as the Racers tied it at 21-all in the late stages of the set.
  • Both teams traded the next few points back and forth before IU Northwest scored the next two points to win the opening set, 26-24.

SECOND SET (IU Northwest 25, Northwestern Ohio 20)

  • The Racers took an early 3-0 lead in the set before IU Northwest rallied for four points in a row to make it a 4-3 lead.
  • Both teams were tied at nine a piece in the early stages of the first set but then IU Northwest outscored UHOH 6-2 for the next eight points to make it 15-11 RedHawks.
  • IUN extended their lead to six to make it 18-12 midway through the second set.
  • UNOH made it as close as three again (22-19) but IU Northwest scored the lastthree out of four points to take the second set 25-20 to grab a 2-0 lead.

THIRD SET (Northwestern Ohio 25, IU Northwest 21)

  • Northwestern Ohio was up 9-5 in the early stages of the third set.
  • IU Northwest fought back and tied it at 11-11.
  • Both teams traded the next four points and it was tied 13-13.
  • UNOH rallied for six points in a row to make it 19-13 for their largest lead of the night.
  • The RedHawks did not give up as they cut it down to 21-19 UNOH but the Racers were able to hold off the late rally and take the third set 25-21.

FOURTH SET (IU Northwest 25, Northwestern Ohio 23)

  • The fourth set went back-and-forth for most of the game.
  • It was 13-13 midway through the set before IU Northwest grabbed their biggest lead in the fourth after scoring three in a row to make it 16-13
  • UNOH did not go away after going on a 6-2 run to take the 19-17 lead late in the fourth set.
  • The RedHawks had a run of their own after scoring the next four in a row to grab a 21-19 lead.
  • The Racers tied it back up at 21-all then both teams traded points to make it 23-23.
  • IU Northwest scored back-to-back points to secure the fourth set 25-23 and win the match 3-1.

FIRST SET (IU Northwest 25, Rochester 14)

  • IU Northwest scored the first six points of the match to go ahead 6-0 in the first set.
  • Rochester fought back into the game and made it 12-8 in favor of the RedHawks. 
  • IUN rallied for the next four points to pull ahead 16-8.
  • The RedHawks eventually took the first set, 25-14.

SECOND SET (Rochester 26, IU Northwest 24)

  • The second set was a close one throughout with both teams going back-and-forth making it 8-8.
  • IU Northwest scored the next four points to go ahead 12-8.
  • Rochester did not go away as the Warriors tied it at 15-all.
  • The RedHawks scored three in a row now to pull ahead 18-15 but Rochester did not give in as they tied it 20-20.
  • IUN led 23-20 late in the set but Rochester used a 6-1 run to close out the second set and win 26-24.

THIRD SET (Rochester 25, IU Northwest 6)

  • Rochester was all over the third set and did not look back. 
  • The Warriors scored the first five points of the set before IU Northwest got on the board.
  • Rochester won the set 25-6.

FOURTH SET (Rochester 25, IU Northwest 14)

  • Rochester led 9-3 early in the fourth set looking to take the match.
  • IU Northwest did not go away as the RedHawks scored four points in a row to pull within two (9-7). 
  • It was 11-8 Rochester before the Warriors rallied and scored six in a row for a 17-8 lead.
  • IU Northwest tried to fight back and make it 23-13 Rochester but the Warriors closed it out and won 25-14.

FINAL SCORE (Rochester 3, IU Northwest 1)  

UP NEXT

  •  IU Northwest will have a quick turnaround and be back in action Saturday, August 28 as the RedHawks play the same two teams with Northwestern Ohio at 11 a.m. CT and Rochester starting around 1 p.m. CT.
