Volleyball Competed in Pair of Matches This Week

MILWAUKEE, Wis. & GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's volleyball team played a pair of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matches this week but unfortunately the RedHawks dropped both contests to Cardinal Stritch Wednesday and St. Francis (Ill.) Thursday. 

 

Wednesday, February 18 (Cardinal Stritch 3, IU Northwest 0)

SET BREAKDOWN
SET 1: Cardinal Stritch 25, IU Northwest 7

  • Cardinal Stritch took the first set 25-7
  • Briah Strezo picked up a service ace to make it 3-2 Stritch. 
  • The Wolves scored five in a row to make it 15-5 to pretty much put the set away.
  • Stritch outscored the RedHawks 10-2 the rest of the opening set.

SET 2: Cardinal Stritch 25, IU Northwest 17

  • Both teams traded points back-and-forth early in the second set which made it 4-4. 
  • Stritch rallied and scored four points in a row to make it 8-4.
  • Strezo recorded a block to make it within one point at 8-7.
  • There was a stretch where Strezo had three straight service aces.
  • Stritch ended up winning the second set, 25-17.

SET 3: Cardinal Stritch 27, IU Northwest 25

  • The third set was the closest one all match.
  • The RedHawks went ahead 3-0 after a servicd ace by Alexis Turner
  • Stritch rallied and took a 8-6 lead moments later in the set. 
  • IU Northwest would eventually tie it back up at 14-all a few rallies later.
  • Genevieve Grah started a small rally for IU Northwest after she tied it with a kill then the RedHawks scored two more to make it 23-21.
  • Both teams traded the next few points then at 25-all, the Wolves scored two in a row to win the set and the match, 27-25.

Thursday, February 18 (St. Francis (Ill.) 3, IU Northwest 0)

SET 1: St. Francis (Ill.) 25, IU Northwest 17

  • IU Northwest scored the first points of the gsme after a kill by Chloe Roberts made it 2-0.
  • The Fighting Saints rallied and scored the next six out of seven points to make it 6-3. 
  • Emileishka De Jesus and Kelsey Ferrell recorded back-to-back kills to keep the RedHawks in the set.
  • Later on, Turner recorded a kill to make it a two-point game at 17-15 but that was the closest IU Northwest got as St. Francis outscored the RedHawks 8-2 to win 25-17.

SET 2: St. Francis (Ill.) 25, IU Northwest 15

  • Both teams scored traded two early points to make it 2-2.
  • St. Francis rallied for four points in a row which made it 6-2 in favor of the Fighting Saints. 
  • This time it was IU Northwest with the answer and four points in a row after an ace by Chloe Roberts
  • The Fighting Saints pulled ahead 18-10 midway through the second set.
  • De Jesus tried to get the RedHawks back in the game with a kill which made it 18-12.
  • That was the closest IU Northwest got as St. Francis won the set 25-15.

SET 3: St. Francis (Ill.) 25, IU Northwest 15

  • Both teams would trade points early on in the first set which made it 7-7 in the early going.
  • De Jesus recorded a kill but then the Fighting Saints scored the next four points to make it 16-11 USF.
  • Ferrell ended that rally with a kill to make it 16-12.
  • St. Francis outscored the RedHawks 9-3 the rest of the set to win 25-15 and take the match 3-0.

UP NEXT

  • IU Northwest will be back in action Monday, February 22 as the RedHawks look to bounce back against Lincoln College for senior night starting at 7 p.m. CT.
