Women's Basketball Uses Balance Effort for Strong 2nd Half Against Huntington Saturday

GARY, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball saw four starters reach double figures Saturday as the RedHawks were able to defeat Huntington, 76-63, Saturday.

GAME RECAP
IU Northwest went up 10-3 after a layup by Michaela Schmidt. Huntington hit back-to-back three-pointers to end the first quarter which made it 10-9 RedHawks.

Lauren Smolen made a basket and Meghan Long hit a three-pointer to make it 17-12 with 9:21 left in the half. The Foresters responded with a three-pointer to cut it back down to two.  

Huntington converted on an and-one to make it 21-20 IU Northwest. Smolen and Samantha Martin hit back-to-back layups to make it 25-20 with 5:10 left in the half. 

Alyna Santiago hit a layup to make it 29-26 with 1:12 remaining then Huntington went on a 5-1 run to end the half, including a layup with three seconds left to make it 31-30 at the break.

The Foresters made a three-pointer and a layup to grab a 36-30 lead to start the second half. Karli Miller and Smolen responded with back-to-back layups to make it 37-34.  HU scored four straight for a 41-34 lead with four minutes left in the third quarter.

IU Northwest was able to responded with a 8-0 run after a three-pointer by Sarah Martina three-point play by Long and a layup by Schmidt made it 42-41 with 2:33 left. Huntington bounced back and went on a 5-0 run to go on a 46-42. 

Santiago hit a three-pointer then back-to-back layups by Tiara Jackson and Miller closed out the third quarter. The RedHawks went on a 7-0 run to end the third quarter to lead 50-46.

Jackson made a pair of free throws, Schmidt made a basket to make it 54-46 IU Northwest with 8:57 to play. Miller made a pair at the line to make it 60-51 at the 5:15 mark. 

Huntington bounced back with consecutive layups to make it 60-55 with 4:10 left in the game. Sarah Martin responded right away with a three-pointer to make it an eight-point game again. 

IU Northwest was able to come out on top and win 76-63.

  • IU Northwest will be back in action Wednesday, November 10 as the RedHawks host their Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener against Roosevelt starting at 5:30 p.m. CT.
