Women's Basketball Puts Up Battle Against #23 Olivet Nazarene Wednesday

Gary, Ind. -- Indiana University Northwest Women's Basketball honored their three seniors before the start of the game. Jocelyn Colburn, Jayla Crump and Ashley O'Malley were all honored and in the starting lineup for the contest. 

ONU led 8-2 in the early stages of the contest. Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) converted a huge and-one play which sparked a 9-1 run for IUN to give the RedHawks a 11-10 lead.

Back-to-back baskets by Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) and Hannah Hammar (Hammond, Ind./Morton) made it 17-12 IUN late in the first period. ONU carried some momentum into the second quarter as the Tigers had back-to-back buckets of their own at the end of the period to cut it to a one-point deficit. 

This helped the Tigers start the second quarter with five straight points to go on a 9-0 run. IUN was able to respond with seven points of their own including a basket by Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) to make it 24-21 RedHawks. 

Boles knocked down consecutive threes to later make it a five-point lead for IUN. ONU responded right away with eight straight points to take a 33-30 lead with under three minutes to go.

Hammar got the RedHawks tied up again with a huge trifecta to make it 33-33. Moments later, Boles gave IUN some momentum going into the halftime as the freshman scored back-to-back buckets including a three-pointer to make it 38-35 and the RedHawks led 38-36 at the break.

ONU started the second half with a basket then Vieck responded for IUN with two baskets in a row to make it 42-38. The RedHawks led most of the third quarter even as big as five again but the Tigers would not go away with ONU hitting a basket at the end of the period paved the way for the fourth.

Unfournately, The fourth quarter was all ONU. IUN did have a good start to the period after Colburn (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) made a basket for a 63-59 lead then Boles made it 65-62 but that was the last lead for the RedHawks. 

Olivet would not nearly not miss from three after struggling to start the game. The Tigers hit four trifectas in a row to take a 74-65 lead with under five minutes to play. 

ONU made it a 12-point lead (85-73) with 2:24 remaining in the game then Vieck kept IUN in the game with a huge three-pointer to make it a single-digit deficit again. The Tigers were able to hang on and secure the 91-78 victory after O'Malley made a bucket.

Vieck led the way for the RedHawks with a double-double as the junior scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Boles had a near double-double as she added 21 points and secured nine rebounds.

O'Malley almost had a double-double as well as the senior pitched in eight points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

IUN returns to action Saturday, February 22 as the RedHawks travel to Elgin, Illinois to take on the Judson Eagles starting at 1 p.m. CT.
