Box Score Davenport, Iowa -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team was unable to hold their lead as Saint Ambrose used a huge fourth quarter to run past the RedHawks in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest Saturday. The Fighting Bees (14-13, 12-8 CCAC) defeated the RedHawks (10-18, 7-13 CCAC), 72-61, Saturday.
IUN led 10-3 in the early stages of the contest after a three-pointer by Michaela Schmidt (Highland, Ind./Highland). SAU responded with a basket then Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) hit a one from down town to make it 13-5 with 2:37 to go in the quarter.
The Fighting Bees ended the quarter with a bucket. The RedHawks led 14-7 after the opening period.
SAU went on a 7-3 run to start the second frame to cut it to a two-point contest. Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) ended the run with a basket to make it 19-15 with 7:12 to go before the break.
IUN led 28-21 with 2:14 remaining in the half then the RedHawks were held off the scoreboard the rest of the period. The Fighting Bees scored the last six points to make it a 28-27 game at the break.
Boles opened the second half with back-to-back buckets which made it 32-27 in the early stages of the second half. SAU ended up tying the game at 38-all with 4:55 to go in the game.
Jessy Siems (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) was able to convert the and-one with 2:23 left in the third period to give the RedHawks a three-point lead again. Moments later, Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) hit a layup to make it 47-42 contest.
The Fighting Bees did some deja vu as SAU scored the last four points of the quarter and held IUN off the board with the RedHawks leading 47-46 after the third. This time it helped the Bees score the first eight points of the final period to go up 54-47.
Schmidt ended IUN's drought with a three-pointer. SAU had the upper hand most of the quarter to take control of the contest.
SAU went up by as much as 15 (68-53) with 2:19 left to go in the game. The Fighting Bees ended up winning the game 72-61.
Three players for the RedHawks reached double figures in scoring. Schmidt led all scorers with 16 points.
Boles scored 14 points for IUN in the setback. Vieck added 13 points to round out the RedHawks leaders.
IUN returns to action for their final home regular season game Wednesday, February 19 as the RedHawks host No. 24 Olivet Nazarene starting at 5:30 p.m. CT.
