Men's Basketball Drops Close Contest Against Governors State Saturday

University Park, Ill. -- The Indiana University Northwest men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss against Governors State Saturday. The Jaguars (9-6, 5-4 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) defeated the RedHawks (10-6, 5-3 CCAC), 85-83, Saturday.

IUN led 23-6 at the 14:15 mark in the first half after Marshaud Watkins (Harvey, Ill.) hit a jumper.  GSU looked to make a rally as the Jaguars cut it to nine with 6:32 left in the game.

Louis Williams (East Chicago, Ind./East Chicago Central) and Watkins hit back-to-back three pointers to make it 45-31 IUN with 2:19 left in the half. 

GSU rallied again in the second half after cutting it to seven (50-43) with 16:57 remaining in the game. Rashad Richardson (Lafayette, Ind./Lafayette Jeff) hit a pair of free throws to make it a 12-point lead for their biggest for the rest of the game. 

The Jaguars tied it at 66-all with 7:06 left in the game. Both teams would trade small leads and ties the rest of the way.

With 2:38 left in the game, GSU knocked down a pair of free throws to make it 79-73 for their biggest lead of the game.

IUN fought back in the game to make it close, Richardson hit a huge three-pointer to tie the game at 83-83 with 11 seconds left. Unfortunately, the Jaguars had the ball and hit the go ahead shot with two seconds remaining to secure the victory. 

Richardson led the way for the RedHawks as the senior recorded a double-double with 25 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Watkins recorded 21 points and Chris Robinson (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) rounded out the scoring for the RedHawks with 11 points.

IUN returns to action Wednesday, January 8 as the RedHawks host Holy Cross College at the Savannah Center starting at 7:30 p.m. CT.
