Box Score Crown Point, Ind. -- Freshman Vincent Lopez (Portage, Ind./Portage) scored his first cathreer goal as a member of IUN as the RedHawks were unable to capitalize off the score as the team lost 3-1 against Trinity Christian at the Crown Point Sportsplex Wednesday.
The RedHawks looked to get an early advantage as freshman Evan Witham (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler) had a shot attempt in the 15th minute but it was saved. A few minutes later in the 17th, Freshman E.J. Salazar (Gary, Ind./Hammond Baptist) tried to tie it but his shot was also saved.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the first 25 minutes. Trinity Christian was able to open up the scoring in the 26th minute as Matt Stuursma found Justin Taylor for the goal to make it 1-0.
Freshman Will Carroll (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) looked to tie before the half but his shot in the 44th minute went wide. As a result, the Trolls led at the halftime break 1-0.
IUN looked for the tie again to start the second half but Salazar's shot attempt was wide. Trinity Christian doubled their lead and made it 2-0 after Fekadu Timmermans scored a goal in the 59th minute.
The RedHawks were fouled in the box while on the attack which set up a penalty kick. Lopez attempted the kick and knocked it through the back of the net for his first goal of the season in the 75th minute to cut it 2-1 Trolls.
Salazar tried to tie it again for IUN but once again his shot went wide. TCC was able to get an insurance goal in the 81st minute after Manasse Mbuyi knocked one through.
Freshman Maxwell Higgins (Kokomo, Ind./Kokomo) recorded 12 huge saves in goal tonight.
IUN Men's Soccer returns to field Wednesday, October 2 as the RedHawks travel to Andrews University to take on the Cardinals starting at 3 p.m. CT.
