Box Score Gary, Ind. -- Roosevelt University was able to win the first set, 25-20, but Indiana University Northwest was able to rally and win three straight sets to capture their fourth straight win.
The RedHawks (4-1, 3-0 CCAC) defeated the Lakers (5-9, 1-2 CCAC), 3-1, at the Savannah Center Thursday. The scores were 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-14.
IUN went ahead 6-3 in the first set but then Roosevelt came back and tied it 13-13 midway through the opener then both teams traded points and became tied 17-17. The Lakers used a 8-3 run to close out the opening set to take it 25-20.
The RedHawks went ahead 7-3 in the next set with a service ace by junior Maddie Maatman (Beecher, Ill./Illiana Christian) and Roosevelt traded rallies in the second set then the Lakers tied it at 11-all. IUN made a 7-1 run capped off by a kill by sophomore Emileishka De Jesus (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) to go ahead 18-12. The Lakers did not go away as the closest they got was 24-23 but then freshman Mary Markusic (Munster, Ind./Bishop Noll) secured the victory with a kill.
Senior Cara Nebel (Portage, Ind./Portage) put the RedHawks ahead 5-0 in the third set after her kill with the pass from junior Caitlin Alwine (Goshen, Ind.). IUN has control of the entire match going ahead 16-9 until a Roosevelt timeout sparked a 9-3 run to pull within one to make it 19-18 RedHawks but that was the closest the Lakers would get as RedHawks closed it out on a 6-1 run.
The fourth set was completely different as this time it was IUN who had an early 9-2 lead capped off by a kill by senior Robyn Griffin (Downers Grove, Ill./Lisle Senior) and the RedHawks never looked back. Sophomore Bella Kuechenberg (Lowell, Ind.) and freshman Alyssa Melendez (Portage, Ind./Portage) gave IUN the biggest lead of the night with a kill and a service ace in a row which allowed the RedHawks to go ahead 14-4.
Midway through the fourth set, Roosevelt tried to regain momentum but freshman Kila Stoudt (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) and junior Erica Kik (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) recorded a huge block to make it 21-11. A few plays later, Kik called match point and was able to end the match after recording her 10th kill of the night.
The RedHawks had four players in double digit kill numbers and three in double figures in digs. Kuechberg led the way with a double-double performance picking up 15 kills and 10 digs.
De Jesus also had a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. Griffin recorded 10 kills to record double figures.
Kik also picked up 10 kills while hitting an impressive .714 and including the one that ended the match. Alwine also had a big night for the RedHawks securing17 digs.
IUN women's volleyball returns to the court Saturday, September 14 as the RedHawks travel to Indiana South Bend to take on the Titans starting at 2 p.m. CT.
