Box Score

Grand Rapids, Mich. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team was unable to come out with the victory as the RedHawks fell to (RV) Aquinas, 55-48, Saturday.

IUN went up 8-5 early in the first quarter after a basket by Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.).  After Aquinas responded with a bucket,  the RedHawks recorded back-to-back layups by Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) and Lauren Smolen (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) which made it 12-7.

The Saints closed out the first quarter on a 8-3 run to tie it. AU and IUN were tied 15-15 after the opening period.

Aquinas had a three which opened up the second quarter to grab a early 18-15 lead then the RedHawks regained the lead after back-to-back baskets by Boles to make it 19-18. The Saints then scored seven in a row to build up a six point lead.

IUN fought right back after a Smolen jumper and a three-pointer by Alexis Vieck (Bicknell, Ind.) made it a one-point deficit with 5:14 left in the half. Unfournately that was the closest the RedHawks got the rest of the half as the Saints went on a 9-0 run before O'Malley scored a basket to make it 34-26 heading into the break.

Using momentum they had going into halftime, Aquinas scored the next five to go up 40-26 for their largest lead of the game. Sarah Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) ended the RedHawks drought with a three-pointer and a layup which made it 40-31.

The RedHawks closed out the third quarter with six points in a row to make it 43-38 at the end of the period. Martin nailed a pair at the line and Schmidt and Boles hit layups.

This time it was IUN who sparked momentum going into the fourth quarter after back-to-back layups by Vieck and Smolen made it 43-42 in favor of Aquinas. After a quick bucket by the Saints, Schmidt answered right back with a layup to make it 45-44 but that was the closest the RedHawks got the rest of the game as Aquinas went on a 10-4 run to close out the game for the or the 55-48 victory

Schmidt continued an impressive start to her collegiate career, leading the RedHawks in scoring with 12 points. Boles added 11 points for IUN to round out the scoring in the setback.

Smolen was active on the glass for the RedHawks as the freshman pulled down nine rebounds.

IUN (2-3) returns to action Wednesday, November 13 as the RedHawks return to conference play as they travel to Trinity International to take on the Trojans starting at 5:30 p.m. CT.
