Volleyball Sweeps Trinity International on Senior Night

Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest volleyball team picked up a huge victory against Trinity International on Senior Night Thursday. 

Cara Nebel (Portage, Ind./Portage) and Robyn Griffin (Downers Grove, Ill./Lisle Senior) were honored before the start of the match. 

TIU led 8-6 early before Alyssa Melendez (Portage, Ind./Portage) picked up a huge kill. The score was then 11-10 TIU in the opening set before IUN scored six unanswered to make it 16-11 capped off by a kill by Bella Kuechenberg (Lowell, Ind./Bishop Noll).

The RedHawks scored the next three points after back-to-back kills by Emileishka De Jesus (Hobart, Ind./Portage) and a service ace by Caitlin Alwine (Goshen, Ind.). IUN closed out the the set and won 25-20.

After the Trojans scored the opening point to open the set, IUN scored the next four with back-to-back service aces by Kuchenberg. TIU then scored four unanswers of their own to take the 5-4 lead. 

IUN led 10-9 in the second set then Joslihn Corradino (Portage, Ind./Portage) picked up a huge kill to make it 11-9 which made a difference going forward. The RedHawks led 14-13 after the Trojans scored the last point then IUN made the run.

The RedHawks outscored the Trojans 11-1 the rest of the set to take a 2-0 lead. Griffin picked up a huge kill to put the RedHawks ahead by five then TIU called timeout.

De Jesus recorded back-to-back kills, Alwine had a service ace and Erica Kik (Griffith, Ind.) had a kill which helped the RedHawks close out the set. IUN won the second set 25-14.

Trinity International looked to fight back in the match after going ahead 4-0 early in the third set. IUN fought back after making it 6-5 in favor of the Trojans then Maddie Maatman (Beecher, Ill./Illiana Christian) had a huge kill which made it 8-6.

IUN went on a 5-1 spurt which had a kill by Kuechenberg and a service ace by De Jesus. TIU tried to fight back making it as close and two points the rest of the way but the RedHawks would not give in.

With the score 22-19, IUN scored the next three out of four points to win the match large in part with two kills in a row by Kuechenberg. Griffin on her potential last home match scored the last two points for the RedHawks which gave IUN the victory, picking up a kill and recording a huge block solo.

Griffin recorded seven kills and four blocks and had a huge third set to win it for the RedHawks. Nebel made the start at setter for the RedHawks but was quickly subbed out.

De Jesus had another double-double tonight, recording 14 kills and 11 digs. Kuechenberg had a near double-double with 10 kills and nine digs.

Alwine broke the school record for digs in a season after recording 19 digs on Thursday brought her total up to 418 with more games to play. 

Maatman had 35 assists and 12 digs to round out the RedHawks leaders in the victory.

IUN returns to action Tuesday, November 12 as the RedHawks travel to Olivet Nazarene for the CCAC Quarterfinals starting at 7 p.m. CT.
