Women's Basketball Overcomes Slow Start Against Calumet College Tuesday

Gary, Ind. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's basketball team overcame a slow start against Calumet College as the RedHawks were able to bounce back and defeat the Crimson Wave, 92-72, Tuesday. 

Calumet College led 14-8 late in the opening quarter. Breanna Boles (Lapel, Ind.) closed out the quarter with a jumpshot but Calumet College was still ahead 16-12.

Boles started the second quarter just like she ended the first with a basket which made it 16-14 CCSJ. Michaela Schmidt (Highland, Ind./Highland) gave IUN a 27-26 lead with 4:06 left in the half then hit a huge three-pointer to make it a four-point advantage. 

The Crimson Wave cut it back down to two points but IUN closed out the half scoring the last seven points to go up 39-30 at the break. Sarah Martin (Demotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) and Da'Leshia Davis (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) hit back-to-back jumpers to wrap up the first half. 

Schmidt opened up the second half with a three-pointer to give IUN a 12-point lead. Midway through the third quarter, Davis gave the RedHawks a 16-point advantage with a huge trifecta which made it 57-41 with 4:08 left in the third.

The fourth quarter started out with back-to-back baskets by Ashley O'Malley (Crown Point, Ind.) to make it 74-53. IUN then went on a 7-3 run capped off by a pair of free throws by Martin to give IUN their biggest lead of the night which was 24.

IUN closed it out and won the game 92-72.

The RedHawks had five players reach double figures. Schmidt led the RedHawks with 26 points and eight rebounds. 

Martin also had a big night on the offensive side of the ball as the freshman recorded 18 points. Boles picked up 14 points on the night.

Davis scored 13 points. O'Malley had 11 points to round out the RedHawks leaders. 

IUN Women's Basketball now has a little break for Thanksgiving and will return to action Tuesday, December 3 as the RedHawks travel to Lincoln, Illinois to take on Lincoln Christian starting at 5:30 p.m. CT.
