Box Score Chicago, Ill. -- The Indiana University Northwest women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match on the road against Roosevelt Saturday.
The Lakers (12-16, 7-9 CCAC) defeated the RedHawks (14-8, 9-7 CCAC), 25-21, 22-25, 26-24, 25-21, at the Goodman Center, Saturday.
Both teams were trading points back-and-forth in the first set. IUN had their biggest lead of the opening set after a kill by Mary Markusic (Munster, Ind./Bishop Noll) made it 18-16.
Roosevelt had the answer and outscored the RedHawks, 9-3, the rest of the way. The Lakers closed out the set scoring the last three points.
IUN looked to bounce back in the second set after losing the first. It did not start out so well as RU went up 5-1 early.
The RedHawks made a 9-4 run to grab a 10-9 lead after a block by Markusic and Robyn Griffin (Downers Grove, Ill./Lisle Senior). The score was tied 12-12 midway through the second set.
IUN scored the next four points to make it 16-12 capped off by a service ace by Caitlin Alwine (Goshen, Ind.). Roosevelt had the answer once again and tied the match and both teams traded points.
Griffin was able to help the RedHawks pull away late after picking up two huge kills including the one that ended the second set from passes by Maddie Maatman (Beecher, Ill./Illiana Christian). IUN won the second set, 25-22.
With the teams tied 1-1, both programs look to win the third set to gain an advantage in the match. IUN went up 7-4 early after a kill by Erica Kik (Griffith, Ind.).
The RedHawks were up 12-11 after a kill by Griffin but then Roosevelt scored four unanswered to gain a 15-12 lead. Bella Kuechenberg (Lowell, Ind./Bishop Noll) gave IUN their biggest lead of the set after her kill made it 19-17.
Both teams were tied 24-24 late in the third set. RU scored back-to-back points to secure the set to go ahead 2-1.
Roosevelt looked to take the match in the fourth set after going up 5-0 early on. The RedHawks fought back to tie the match at 10-all after a kill by Kuechenberg.
The Lakers looked to put the match away but a kill by Kila Stoudt (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids) kept the RedHawks in the match. Roosevelt was still able to pull away late and win the fourth set, 25-21.
Kik led the RedHawks on the attack with 14 kills with a .522 attack percentage. Griffin had a huge night on the attack for the RedHawks, recording 13 kills on a .462 attacking percentage.
Kuechenberg had a near double-double, picking up 10 kills and nine digs. Alwine had 10 digs.
Maatman led the defense and on assists as the junior recorded 12 digs and 37 assists. Emileishka De Jesus (Hobart, Ind./Portage) had eight kills with 11 digs to round out the RedHawks leaders.
IUN returns to action Tuesday, November 5 as the RedHawks host Indiana South Bend at the Savannah Center starting at 7 p.m. CT.
